John Lyon Ealing Junior Bursary

Ealing Music Service are pleased to announce funding for a 2-year Junior Bursary Award to add to our list of John Lyon Ealing Awards. This award is open to pupils aged 7 – 11 at time of application who have been learning an instrument for at least 1 year and are at Grade 1 level or equivalent. Successful scholars will receive £645 per year towards the cost of musical provision and additional musical opportunites or provision currently not accessed.

Applicants for all awards must:

  • Be a resident of, and educated at a non-fee paying school in, the London Borough of Ealing.

  • Demonstrate significate musical aptitude appropriate to the type of award nominated for.

  • Have demonstrated commitment and eagerness in practicing their instrument/voice, attending lessons, ensembles rehearsals, workshops and performances.
  • Have the potential to make substantial progress in music and benefit from all the activities the Bursary or Scholarship may offer.
  • Have received the minimum duration of tuition appropriate to the award nominated for.
  • Be hampered from reaching their full potential due to economic reasons.

    Eligibility for specific awards are as follows:

  • Award entries must be submitted online via Online Application Form (EMS504e).
  • Applications must be completed by a parent/guardian if applicant is under 18 years old at time of application.
  • The application process involves providing an email for both Instrumental Teacher and Head Teacher, both of whom will be asked for a confidential report on the student to support the application.
  • Nominations received after the deadline will not be considered.
  • If an applicant is successful in the initial application stage, they must undertake an audition adjudicated by a specialist panel.
  • There will be a 10 minute time limit for auditions; this time should be split up between two pieces which demonstrate the applicant’s skill as a performer.
  • If the applicant requires an accompanist, they must arrange one independently.
  • The audition room offers use of a piano and music stand. No other instruments will be available.
  • Applicants may only apply for one of the John Lyon Ealing Awards and no other Ealing Award except the Leonardo Aggio Award.

  • 1. The administrator of these awards is: Ealing Music Service.
  • 2. The funder of these awards is: John Lyon’s Charity.
  • 3. Auditioning and selection of candidates will be done by: Ealing Music Service.
  • 4. “Awardee” refers to the specific successful applicants of the various awards.
  • 5. “Parent” refers to the parent or legal guardian of the applicant awarded the award.
  • 6. The bursary/scholarship will run for a 2 year period from *1st September, 2019 – 31st August, 2021.
  • 7. The administrator reserves the right to withdraw the scholarship from winners if they move out of the London Borough of Ealing.
  • 8. The administrator reserves the right to withdraw the scholarship from winners if they stop attending a non-fee paying school in the London Borough of Ealing.
  • 9. The maximum yearly scholarship amounts are as follows:

  • 10. Amounts awarded in the first year will remain the same, with no inflationary increases, for the following years.
  • 11. Bursaries/Scholarships should be used to fund the following activities:
    Group/Individual lessons, Instrument Hire, Saturday or after School Music sessions, Other Ensembles, Grade exam fees, Concert Attendance.
  • 12. The range of activities approved must be balanced and appropriate to the needs of the individual.
  • 13. *Unused funds from year 1 only will carry over to the following year due to Jan 2020 start.
  • 14. Bursary/Scholarship finances should be used to support appropriate musical provision to further enhance musical progress that puts the child first and shows best value for money.

    Making a Request

  • 15. All requests for payment are to be made to the Administrator, who will ensure all requests meet the applicant’s needs and desire for progress.
  • 16. All requests for payment should be sent to ealingmusicservice@ealing.gov.uk
  • 17. The parent must put in an official request for all expenditure with the Administrator before 30th Jan 2020 and similarly by the same date in the subsequent years of the scholarship.
  • 18. The awardee/parent must put in an official request for all expenditure with the Administrator before the service requested is provided.
  • 19. Payment to the service provider will be made by the Administrator upon delivery of an invoice or quote.
  • 20. In special cases, which must be agreed by the Administrator in advance, payment may be made to the awardee or parent upon delivery of a receipt or ticket.

    Awardee’s Responsibilities

  • 21. The awardee may be required to perform or make appearances at events run by Ealing Music Service. Wherever possible the Administrator will give 28 days’ notice of attendance at events, which may be during the school day.
  • 22. The awardee’s family and tutors must submit an end of year report each year which will be shared with John Lyon’s Charity.
  • 23. It is the parent’s responsibility to inform the Administrator if there is a change in residency.
  • 24. The Administrator will keep a detailed breakdown of grant expenditure.
  • 25. The Administrator reserves the right to alter the terms and conditions of these awards if appropriate.
